Scalpel debridement has minimal effects on painful plantar calluses in older people: a randomised trial
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background Plantar calluses are often associated with increased plantar pressure and foot pain, which can have a detrimental impact on the mobility and independence of an older person. Scalpel debridement is a key management strategy for painful calluses; however the effectiveness of this treatment in older people has not been rigorously investigated. The aim of this randomised trial was to evaluate the effectiveness of scalpel debridement in reducing plantar pressure and pain associated with forefoot plantar calluses.

Effectiveness of scalpel debridement for painful plantar calluses in older people: a randomised trial
Background Plantar calluses are often associated with foot pain, which can have a detrimental impact on the mobility and independence of an older person. Scalpel debridement is a key management strategy for painful corns and calluses, however the effectiveness of this treatment in older people has not been rigorously investigated. Therefore, we conducted a parallel-group randomised trial to eva...

BACKGROUND Plantar calluses are a common cause of foot pain, which can have a detrimental impact on the mobility and independence of older people. Scalpel debridement is often the first treatment used for this condition. Our aim was to evaluate the effectiveness of scalpel debridement of painful plantar calluses in older people. METHODS This study was a parallel-group, participant- and assess...
متن کاملThe evaluation of three treatments for plantar callus: a three-armed randomised, comparative trial using biophysical outcome measures.
BACKGROUND Callus is one of the most common foot skin complaints experienced by people of all ages. These painful and unsightly lesions often result in disability. The 'gold standard' of treatment is scalpel debridement by a trained specialist; however, people also seek over-the-counter remedies. There is a lack of clinical evidence for the efficacy of such products, which makes selection by pa...
متن کاملEfficacy of a multifaceted podiatry intervention to improve balance and prevent falls in older people: study protocol for a randomised trial
BACKGROUND Falls in older people are a major public health problem, with at least one in three people aged over 65 years falling each year. There is increasing evidence that foot problems and inappropriate footwear increase the risk of falls, however no studies have been undertaken to determine whether modifying these risk factors decreases the risk of falling. This article describes the design...
متن کاملThe effectiveness of salicylic acid plasters compared with ‘usual’ scalpel debridement of corns: a randomised controlled trial
BACKGROUND Corns are a common foot problem and surveys have indicated that between 14-48% of people suffer from them. Many of these will seek podiatry treatment, however there is little evidence to indicate which current treatments provide long term resolution. This study compared 'usual' treatment (enucleation with a scalpel) with the application of 40% salicylic acid plasters to corns to inve...
